A California architect with an associate's degree had always intended to complete the requirements for his bachelor of arts. When he saw an e-mail offering degrees based on life experience, he sent in about $500 and received a diploma and a transcript. He didn't know he’d been deceived until a couple of months later, when he saw a television program about diploma mills. A New York man who’d never been able to go to college thought he’d found the ideal way to get an education without sacrificing his full-time job. An Internet ad told him he could receive an accredited degree in business administration without leaving his home. After spending over $400, he began to get suspicious – the coursework consisted of writing a summary of a $25 textbook. He soon found that the “school” had been exposed elsewhere as a fraud . . . more |
